Tank Installation Advice

Installation:

Installing a sewage treatment plant is a complex job that requires professional expertise. It's important to follow building regulations and ensure the system functions properly to avoid negative impacts on the environment and surrounding properties.

If is important to carry out the appropriate ground testing to ensure the ground is suitable for a sewage treatment plant, prior to starting an installation. other important points to consider include:

Location

Choose a site that slopes away from the house and away from regularly used parts of the garden.

Distance

Building regulations usually require the plant to be at least 7 meters from any habitable building.

Noise

Consider how the plant's motor or pump might be noisy and how to minimize the impact.

Venting

Ensure the vent is out of sight and downwind from the house to reduce the risk of odors.

Drainage

Consider the required drainage falls to ensure the system functions properly.

Approval

Check that you have the correct Building Regulations approval and consent of discharge from the environment agency.

Install:

Excavation: Dig a hole in the chosen location that's big enough for the tank and any additional space. Tank placement: Carefully position the tank in the hole and secure it with concrete. Backfilling: Use the correct backfill material to stabilize the tank. Inlet and outlet: Install the inlet and outlet connections. Power supply: Connect the plant to the property's power supply. Testing: Test the system to ensure it's working properly.

Maintenance

Have it regularly serviced: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for desludging and emptying.

Use the right cleaning products: Use phosphate-free, environmentally friendly products that are suitable for septic tanks. Use the manufacturer's recommended doses for your water type.

  • Use liquids instead of powders: Powders can clump and cause blockages.

  • Spread out your laundry: Wash your clothes throughout the week so the system isn't overloaded.

  • Stick to the same products: The bacteria in your tank will work more efficiently with products it's used to treating.

  • Only flush the 3 Ps: Only flush pee, poo, and paper down the toilet.

  • Check for damage: Look for signs of breakage, corrosion, and leakage.

  • Ensure it's switched on: Leaving your plant off can damage the motor and moving parts.

  • Position it correctly: Place the plant at least 3 meters away from the property boundary and any trees with large root systems.

  • Ensure it has access: Make sure the plant is easily accessible for emptying, desludging, and maintenance.
